The DPC Journey
This page serves as a helpful, all-in-one guide to Direct Primary Care, walking you through what it is, how it works, and whether it is the right fit for you. It also outlines each step of the process, from learning more to becoming a member. If you have any questions along the way, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
What is Direct Primary Care?
Direct Primary Care (DPC) is a membership-based approach to healthcare that removes insurance companies from the doctor-patient relationship. Instead of billing insurance for each visit, you pay a simple monthly fee that covers all your primary care needs.
Think of it like a gym membership, but for your health. Your membership includes:
- Unlimited visits including in-person, virtual, or by phone
- Same-day or next-day appointments with no more waiting weeks
- Extended appointments lasting 30-60 minutes, never rushed
- Direct access to your doctor via text, call, or email anytime
- No copays, no surprise bills with transparent, predictable pricing
DPC allows your doctor to focus entirely on you, not paperwork, not insurance approvals, not billing codes. It's healthcare the way it should be.
How Insurance Works with DPC
Your Luna Health membership covers all of your primary care visits, but you'll still use your insurance for things like lab work, imaging, prescriptions, and specialist referrals.
Why PPO Plans Work Best
Your insurance plan needs to allow out-of-network doctors to order labs, imaging, and place referrals. This is where the type of plan you have matters:
✓ PPO Plans
Generally work great with DPC. You can see any Luna doctor and they are able to send in referrals to specialists, order labs, etc...
✗ HMO Plans
Usually require you to stay in-network and get referrals through your primary care doctor, which doesn't work great for DPC.
What About Medicare?
Medicare does allow out-of-network doctors to order tests and make referrals, so it generally works well with DPC. If you have a Medicare supplement, check that it doesn't require in-network doctors for orders or referrals. PPO-style and Medex supplements tend to work best.

Good News - Pay with FSA, HSA, or HRA Funds!
Your Luna Health membership is eligible for payment using pre-tax health spending accounts. This means you can use money you've already set aside for healthcare and save even more.
HSA
Health Savings Account: A tax-advantaged account you own, paired with a high-deductible health plan. Funds roll over year to year and can be invested.
FSA
Flexible Spending Account: An employer-sponsored account that lets you set aside pre-tax dollars for medical expenses. Use it or lose it each year.
HRA
Health Reimbursement Arrangement: An employer-funded account that reimburses you for qualified medical expenses, including DPC memberships.
To use these funds, you can pay for your membership with your HSA or FSA debit card, or submit your receipt for reimbursement through your plan. You will receive automated invoices and related documentation from Luna Health, and we are always happy to provide any additional paperwork you may need for your records.
